FP Dejustation Menu

Too many flavours of Functional Programming? Don’t worry - like a French bouchon; we will try a taste of some famous languages, and see what they look like. You can pick up your favourite one for the next visit! Using a simple project idea (building an API), we will go through the following menu:

  • Python A good appetiser
  • Scala Not pure, but a delicious starter
  • Haskell Main dish
  • The desserts Ocaml, Elm, Elixir and others (we are allowed to skip the diet restrictions for dessert!)

If your a developer or person interested and seem some theory about Functional Programming and are ready to start applying it to some projects, this is a talk for you. Also, this is great for people who are looking for some help to start modelling a project or feature using the concepts of FP.

Hanneli recommends at least having a basic introduction to Functional Programming before attending her talk, and if you’re completely new to FP, she recommends watching Learning Functional Programming with Javascript by Anjana Vakil.

After this talk, you’ll be able to connect pieces of theory with ideas to write code (in your favorite language) following the functional programming principle. Sometimes, it’s not obvious how to combine theory and practice, and this talk will help with this task.

About Hanneli:

Hanneli is a developer addicted to code, learning new programming languages, blow capacitors, doing some C programming, and commiting useful (or not) code for random Open Source Projects that she finds on Github. She tries to help the community by writing blog posts and organising meetups about NoSQL, programming languages, and Math/Physics/Science.

Outside of programming, Hanneli likes, among other things, math, Lego (yes, it’s actually “Lego” and not “Legos”), dogs, hardware, and obscene amounts of coffee. She also enjoys playing Pokémon and is addicted to books (she has more than 500 items in her current wishlist!).

When asked what she’s looking forward to most about Lambda World, Hanneli replied, “I’m really looking forward to watching the sessions! I heard so much positive feedback about the 2016 edition that I can’t wait to see the contents of this year!”
